Figure 5.5 presents the percentage of blacks who agreed with the statement “Immigrants strengthen the United States” at multiple points in time between 2006 and 2016 based on Pew Research Center polling. The figure shows that a majority of blacks have always felt that immigrants strengthen the nation. However, in 2016 more blacks agreed with this statement than before. Moreover, in just a four-year period between 2012 and 2016 blacks’ perceptions of immigrants improving the nation increased by over 10 percent. In 2016, a supermajority (67%) of blacks agreed that immigrants strengthen the United States. The results suggest that the current political climate may make it easier for the Democratic Party to appeal to Latinos without sacrificing black voters. In fact, such appeals may improve the party’s standing with the black community.
